Los Angeles Urban League Christmas Sharing Program

We hope that as an integral part of the Los Angeles Urban League’s family of supporters, you will join us in our Christmas Sharing Program.  Our objective is to present 70 families in our area with toys, gift cards and other items of necessity.  As we move into the holidays in the midst of a global economic disaster, Neighborhoods@Work seeks to bring cheer and relief to our families in the community.  Gifts such as gas cards, grocery store gift cards and gift certificates for clothing are needed the most.  We would also welcome products or services from your companies (i.e. free internet service for 6 months) as gifts.  Our strategy is to connect with families through giving and assistance.  This is not just about feel-good gifts for the holidays.  Many of our families are in dire straits.  Therefore, we are appealing to each of you to adopt a family or families to assist our efforts.

As an example of the level of need, last week my Marketing and Outreach team met with a mother and student from Crenshaw High School .  The mother is an amputee and receives dialysis 3 days a week.  As a result of being on dialysis, the mother lost her job 2 years ago and subsequently she and her daughter were evicted from their apartment.  To make matters worse, the daughter, who is an honor roll student in her junior year at Crenshaw High School has spina bifida and is paralyzed for life.  The mother’s sole source of income is $463 per month from child support.  She is ineligible for food stamps and financial assistance due to her status as an immigrant from the Caribbean Islands . This family has needs of the most basic kind including groceries, clothing, an electric wheelchair and cellular/internet service for the student.  This is just one story of many of our families in need. 

 Please join us in our outreach efforts during this holiday season.  Should you choose to adopt a family, aside from products or services from your company, may I suggest a donation of $250 per family in the form of cash and/or gift cards.  However, we welcome all levels of cash contributions you are able to give to a family.  We are looking to have gifts and/or gift commitments by December 8^th`.
