The City Of Refuge’s Sanctuary Choir set the church on fire, as they presented the live recording of their second CD titled “Free.” Praises were going up all over the building . Some attendees were shouting and dancing with the choir throughout the recording.
The choir began the praise party with the praise anthems “Praise Is Power” and “Troubles Away.”
On these songs the choir sang with ease and spirit-filled power. The crowd moved and pumped their fists with the choir on both songs. “I wanted to make the first two songs to be old school and to get the crowd in the mood to worship. It came off very well, stated Gerald Haddon, the choir’s musical director and executive producer of the CD.
The choir sang dynamically on the smoothly spiritual song “Holy Is The Lamb.” On this song their vocals were reminiscent of Dr. Mattie Moss Clark’s classic song “Hung Up for My Hang Ups.” The choir went high and higher in their vocal range as well in the spirit.
Recording artist Prez, of Renee and Prez, sang his voice off on the song “Rain.” During the song, he began grooving in the spirit and did not stop until it was over. Haddon stated, “I wanted Prez to be on the first record, but he was busy recording his CD (with Renee.) This time when I asked him to be apart of it, he agreed and he did a great job on the song.”
Tye Tribbett kept the spirit flowing during the second half of the recording, singing lead on the title track. During the recording of this song, the whole sanctuary was having church. Attendees and even honored guest were dancing in the Holy Spirit. “It was amazing how we got Tye to become apart of the recording. I wrote the song “Free,” and I joking said, it would be nice to have Ty sing on it. Little did I know, that one of the choir members actually knew him. They reached out to him and he agreed to do it. The song was wonderful.”
Gospel duo Mary Mary were the surprise guest. They sang lead on the traditional flavored song “Already Done.” “They are church girls, so this song was easy for them to sing. Originally, I wanted them to sing lead on the song that my wife led, but the timing was kind of off. We didn’t have a lead for the “Already Done” song. I told about the song and I’m so happy that they agreed to do it,. Erika said ‘Doctor, we’ll be glad to sing that song with the choir.’” stated Haddon.
Tammy Haddon sang lead on the spirit-touching song “Run To The Altar.” The song had this reporter feeling the spirit. “I’m glad that my wife did this song, it was meant for her to do. Her voice conveyed the message of Jesus Christ and how we all need him.”
The recording concluded with The Gap Band flavored song “God Said It,” which was lead by assistant choir director Patrick. The choir sang and spiritually grooved until the last note. “I set out to make this recording different from the first recording and I believe that we succeeded in doing that. Every singer and musician did a wonderful job in lifting up the name of Jesus. I hope people who listen to this recording be encouraged, delivered and set free. That is the whole purpose for this recording, ” stated Haddon.
There was also video footage that was used for the songs “Perfect Love Song” and “Rain.” “The video idea came from myself. I gave the Drama Department head Sharri, the list of songs and told her the concept of what I wanted. I must say that they delivered on it.
We had more videos but due to time constraints we could not get to all of them, but they will definitely be on the DVD, so check for it.”
This live recording was a great way to start a great new year. Look for the release of “Free” in stores later this year.
