Program is Open to all Fourth to Eighth Graders

Art Center College of Design, one of the world's premier art and design schools, has opened registration for the Spring 2009 session of its Art Center for Kids program. Art Center for Kids offers school-aged children (grades fourth through eighth) conceptually-based art and design classes that promote innovation, critical thinking and visual literacy. Classes will be held each Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at the College's Hillside Pasadena campus (1700 Lida Street, Pasadena) and South Campus (950 South Raymond Avenue, Pasadena).

"We all share one goal: to nurture creativity and help children become designers of their own world," said Paula Goodman, Director of K-12 Programs. Scholarships are available to talented students who need financial assistance.

Courses offered through Art Center for Kids range from still life drawing, photography and illustration to animation, architecture and transportation design. A sample of classes offered through Art Center for Kids includes:

- Architecture from the Inside Out--using simple cardboard, glue and paints, construct projects that reflect the world around you from three different perspectives: the near (things we touch), the middle (the spaces that hold us) and the far (the settings we live in).

- Designing Toy Cars--create exciting toy car designs using a variety of sketching, illustration, and presentation techniques. Learn how to visually communicate your ideas and explore how to develop your ideas into real products.

- Design a Robot--build an autonomous robot and teach it to navigate an obstacle course and interact with other robots and kids.

- Cartooning Techinique and Production--learn the nuts-and-bolts of comic book creation. Lessons--    include character design, page composition, penciling, inking (with both pen and brush), lettering and use of screen tone effects.

Art Center for Kids holds seven-week long classes (February 15-March 29) for fourth through eighth graders on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 pm on Sundays. Cost per course is $260, which includes the cost of all materials. One exception is Photography, which is $275 and also includes materials.
