Marlborough uses fourth-quarter run to break game open, 8-0 run keys 54-43 victory over Arroyo Grande in Div. III-AA quarterfinals
Marlborough’s quest for a seventh consecutive Southern Section title was kept alive after a 54-43 victory over Arroyo Grande Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Division III-AA playoffs
The Mustangs were spurred by an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter that turned a tight game into a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.
The game was physical throughout as fouls were called far and few between in the early going, but head coach Trenton Jackson noted that it’s what his team has come to expect during the playoffs.
“As long it goes both ways, we don’t care,” Jackson said.
Senior guard Taylor Ball was one of three Mustangs who finished with 10 points but it was her three assists during that fourth-quarter run that picked up the slack after center Talia Caldwell sprained her ankle in the third quarter.
Caldwell left the game with 5:24 in the third quarter but returned in the fourth and finished with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She was noticeably limping after the game but Jackson wasn’t too concerned about her missing any action.
“We’ll just have to ice it and take it day by day,” Jackson added.
The Mustangs will face Santa Margarita on Saturday in the Division III-AA semifinals at a site to be determined.
