Marqueece Harris Dawson

Executive Director of Community Coalition leads by example

At first glance the youthful exuberance on the face of 39-year-old Marqueece Harris Dawson explains his energy, but upon discovery you immediately find a source of information that will serve the Los Angeles based Community Coalition for years to come.

As Executive Director of the organization that has been a benchmark for spawning the political career of the first woman Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Dawson has managed a seamless transition that has stamped his signature to the community.

The Morehouse graduate has been at the helm of one of the regions most prominent non-profit groups for the past five years, increasing its membership to an all time high of 4000 and managing 35 full and part-time employees.

However it is what Dawson has accomplished outside the doors of the South Los Angeles agency that has won him rave reviews from the ever changing demographic of citizens for whom he is obligated to perform.

"I get an opportunity to work with 1000 high school students, seniors and helping those struggling with substance abuse and everyday problems and the ultimate reward is to see them flourish and grow beyond those circumstances," Dawson said.

His vast dedication comes on the heels of 14 years as a youth organizer and seeing what everyday people can do by coming together and how they never see the world the same again.

One of his many obstacles is experiencing how long common sense solutions take to be formalized in a highly political landscape.

Which is one of the primary reasons why those who are concerned they may lose their chief community organizer to politics need not worry.

"It's easy to see the things you have to learn and see how they would be successful in politics, but I have no desire to go there," he stated.

His concerns of growing budget problems within the State and bad policy ruining people's live is more than enough to keep him right where he is most effective.

The Los Angeles native who moved with his family to San Gabriel Valley at a young age could not wait to get back to the region that he loves and wants to improve, and for that he has his passion to be thanked for.
