Los Angeles City Councilmember Jan Perry Joins Community During Earth Day Tree Planting

In celebration of Earth Day, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market partnered with LA City Councilmember Jan Perry and LA Conservation Corps today to plant 60 trees in South Los Angeles. More than 150 people pitched in to plant trees near a future Fresh & Easy grocery store opening at the intersection of Central Ave & Adams Blvd. Other participants included 20th Street Elementary School, the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, A Place Called Home, and the Children's Center.

"I commend Fresh & Easy and the Conservation Corp for their efforts towards making Los Angeles a cleaner and greener place to live," said Councilwoman Jan Perry. "It is wonderful to see a local grocery store come to our community and partner with such a reputable community organization to help beautify and green our community."

Key to the day's success was the work of LA Conservation Corps. Recognized for their programs that beautify the community, while at the same time providing at-risk youth with positive activities and direct involvement in major projects, LA Conservation Corps has planted over 50,000 trees in the greater Los Angeles area.

"We are pleased to call Fresh & Easy one of our community partners," said Bruce Saito, Executive Director of LA Conservation Corps. "We look forward to continuing the relationship that we have forged today as we worked together to improve a neighborhood."

"We believe everyone deserves fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices, regardless of where they live," said Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy CEO. "As future neighbors in South LA, we're proud to support Councilwoman Jan Perry and the LA Conservation Corps in their efforts to make a real difference in this community."

Planting trees is one of the best ways to ensure a sustainable environment. In addition to creating oxygen and cleaning the air, trees clean the soil and control noise pollution.

Fresh & Easy has a strong, ongoing commitment to operating policies and principles that work towards creating a greener environment. For example, the company uses a 500,000 sq ft solar panel to help power its distribution center in Riverside, which was a $13 million investment for the company. It is one of the largest in California and in the world. The company is also a pilot member of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Volume Certification Program, in its effort to build sustainable buildings.
