To reassure students, their parents and guardians as well as staff, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Ramon C. Cortines sent out on Monday memos, parent letters and telephone messages indicating there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in LAUSD, based on information from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.  The superintendent also emphasized that all schools are open.

"The school district is working closely with the L.A. County Department of Public Health to protect the health of students and staff," LAUSD Director of Student Medical Services, Dr. Kimberly Uyeda said.  "More than 600 school nurses are monitoring student absences, and building and grounds workers are washing down common areas at school sites more frequently as needed."

The information also recommended the following steps to avoid either catching or spreading any flu.

-      Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

-       If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or upper sleeve, not your hands.

-       Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap, especially after coughing, sneezing or going to the restroom.  Also, wash your hands before eating.

-       If you are sick, stay home. If your child is sick, please do not send him or her to school.

"The health and safety of our students is our first priority. We are committed to on-going communications to the LAUSD family," said Superintendent Cortines.
