LOS ANGELES URBAN LEAGUE & THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY HONOR
ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING BLACK MEN and INTRODUCE FIRST BLACK PRINCESS

The Los Angeles Urban League hosted the 36th annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Dinner fundraiser in April. The League and Dinner Chair, the Walt Disney Company honored the Black Men of the Oscars, bestowing the prestigious Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award on the 19 African-American men who have received the highest recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton received the Community Coalition Partnership Award and five outstanding 12th grade students who plan to attend college this fall received the Los Angeles Urban League/Nestlé Youth Leadership Awards, with scholarships totaling $15,000. Appearances by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and actress/activist Alfre Woodward were several highlights of the evening. There was also a surprise and very special live musical performance by Anika Noni Rose, who is the voice of Tiana, Disney's first African American princess in the animated film “The Princess and the Frog” to be released in theaters in December. At www.laul.org, look for the three-part video series, “The Tale of Two Brothers,” which was unveiled at the Dinner and depicts the impact of the services provided by the Los Angeles Urban League in our communities.
