West Basin Municipal Water District has honored Congresswoman Maxine Waters as one of its 2008 Legislators of the Year.  Congresswoman Waters was presented the award by West Basin Directors Gloria Gray, Ronald Smith, Edward Little, and Carol Kwan at a meeting in Washington, D.C.

"Congresswoman Waters' support for local water reliability projects within West Basin's service area has been instrumental in bringing new recycled water pipeline construction to the South Bay, reducing our dependence on imported water and creating jobs in the local community," said West Basin Board Vice President Gloria Gray.

Congress recently approved $5.1 million in stimulus funding and another $2.9 million in federal appropriations to extend West Basin's recycled water infrastructure to large water users in part of the 35th Congressional District, helping to conserve precious drinking water for other uses.  This shovel-ready project is in the design phase, scheduled to begin construction in the next few months.

Congresswoman Waters' support for recycled water infrastructure moves West Basin closer to reducing our dependence on imported water from 66% today to 33% by the year 2020.  This recent approval of federal funds, with Congresswoman Waters' support, is moving the West Basin service area toward more local control of its water supplies.

"In a time of extended drought, half empty storage reservoirs, and environmental regulations cutting imported water supplies from Northern California to protect endangered fish species, funding for local infrastructure projects that will increase local water reliability is the right thing to do and our Board is proud to recognize Congresswoman Waters for her outstanding effort," said West Basin Board President Edward C. Little.
