Giving Mom a Pleasant Surprise

Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.  It is the day when mothers are honored, not only by their children but by others who honor their role as a mother.  Motherhood is basic to all live beings; in other words if you live, eat, sleep, breathe, etc., then you have a mother. 

Being a mother gives a more concrete meaning to the saying, “there aren’t enough hours in the day.” No matter what age, children always need mom for something: guidance, money, a good meal, a quick hug.  A lucky day is one in which she gets to indulge in things that she enjoys.

Though the traditional way of honoring a mother is showering her with gifts,  there are many mothers who would be satisfied with less tangible things: love, thoughtfulness, peace, remembrance, time-off and things that are priceless, gift giving is the most commonly thought of way of honoring one’s mother. 

Mother’s Day is Sunday May 13. And, while she may relish, the more traditional things like being served breakfast and personalized coffee mugs, she may also be pleasantly surprised by something unexpected. That being said, here are some great ways to show your mom you’re really thinking about her.

A lady always likes to be treated to a nice dinner every once and awhile. A nice gift for mom may be taking her out for breakfast, lunch or a night on the town. Whether it’s dad treating the mother of his kids or the whole family going to a nice restaurant to celebrate mom, you can’t go wrong with either. If going out to eat is not in the budget, never fear, cooking her favorite dish at home is just as good, and cozier too.

A trip is another surprise you can spring on the special day for the lady of the house. A family trip to an exotic location, city or a weekend hotel stay could be in order. Another way you could surprise Mom would be a day of pampering at a spa. You could also just let her relax that day and take care of her needs.

Also, try some alternatives to cards and flowers (which are still great by the way), like birthstone jewelry (maybe all the kids can pitch in) or a nail salon appointment that she can use any time. See what kinds of clothes she likes. Ask if she wants to spend the whole day to herself, doing whatever it is that she likes to do without interruption.

How about a picnic at the beach with some of her favorite foods?  Or, think of a gadget that would make her life easier (according to whatever she does on a regular basis.) There is still the traditional Mother’s Day restaurant breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, just make sure to make reservations in advance as it may be difficult to get a table (sometimes that kind of thing ruins a holiday.)
