Second Baptist Church will observe its 127th Anniversary on Sunday, May 20, at the 8 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services.

The theme for the occasion is ‘We've Come This Far By Faith' based on II Corinthians 5:7, ‘we walk by faith and not by sight.'

"The community is invited join this significant celebration. As Los Angeles' oldest African American Baptist congregation, Second Baptist has maintained an uninterrupted presence in the city since its inception in May 1885," said Pastor William J. Epps.

Members will be recognized at both services. The honorees are Antonette Carter who joined in 1944, June Boyd and Polo Rich who joined in 1945, Wrenetta Howard, Clara James, and Rebecca Williams who joined 1946, Eugene Coleman Sr. and Eleanor Elkins who joined in 1947, Aretha Stockard who joined in 1947 and Gussie Edmondson who joined in 1948.

"A souvenir will be given to those in attendance to commemorate this occasion along with a booklet depicting contributions to our Spiritual Growth Campaign which provided the initial seed revenue of more than two million dollars for the remodeling of the church," added Dr. Epps.

Second Baptist Church, a national cultural landmark, is located at 2412 Griffith Avenue in Los Angeles. For information about Anniversary activities, call (213) 748-0318.
