Marques HoustonSentinel one-on-one exclusive interview
By Brandon I. BrooksSentinel Entertainment Editor Marques Houston is back with his fourth solo album titled, "Mr. Houston".
After taking a two-year long hiatus, Houston caught up with the Sentinel to discuss how he is ready to step out and take control of his music career.
His new album is being released under his own entertainment umbrella, MusicWorks Entertainment. "That's why the title is Mr. Houston", Houston said. "Because it's me, I am a CEO now, I am the boss of my own business and I am just doing my own thing as far as business and as far as my career and I wanted everybody to feel what I was feeling as far as my relationships and just everything that I was going through and everything that I was feeling I wanted my fans to enjoy that".
A veteran of 20 years, Marques Houston has starred in five major motion pictures and two network sitcoms. With everything that Marques Houston has accomplished, Houston shared with the Sentinel that this is the first time he actually took full control of his musical career. Houston said that he always had help from those that he calls his "team".
"My team has always been strong too, no doubt in respect to everybody that's always helped me throughout my career", Houston said. "But this time I just knew where I wanted to be and where I wanted to go, so I was like you know let me just go".
For the past couple of years, Houston has been busy recording and focusing heavily on Internet marketing and promotion. With the industry-changing daily, to compete and stay on the cutting edge of promotion, Houston set out to set himself apart by packaging a DVD with his new album.
Houston shared that he wanted to make history and do something that no other artist has done before. "I did a video to each song off the album packaged together as a DVD with all the videos that I did for this album, along with the album, along with the mix-tape trying to put together a nice little package for the holidays".
To many critics surprise, Houston produced his entire new project. Houston said that this album was about having a live sound, which differs from his last three albums.
Houston shared that it's important for his fans to hear the album because it's really an expression of who he is.
"It's like all me, no examples from anybody else like "you should do this". I knew exactly what I wanted to do and I knew what I wanted my fans to hear from me and that's what this album is".
So what's up next for Houston, he shared with the Sentinel that he is just focusing on his new company MusicWorks, ran by himself and Jerome Jones (Rome from IMX).
"We run our new company and we have a lot of new artist that are coming out. The biggest release for us right now is Omarion, he's scheduled to release in November", Houston said. "His album is blazing hot. That's what we are really excited about".
Marques Houston has always been a dual threat in the entertainment industry, acting and singing, so it's to no surprise he has a new movie project set to release in February or March of next year. This is Houston's first time producing a film. The movie is titled "Boogietown" and it's a dance film.
Houston shared with the Sentinel that he definitely has many more potential television projects in the works so don't be surprised if you see him on a series next fall. He said that he isn't interested in directing in the near future but that he would continue to work behind the scenes as a producer.
"I am not into directing", Houston said. "I like being in front of the camera, I don't like being behind the camera. I will produce but I don't want to direct yet. But definitely more movie projects and television projects because I have been acting simultaneously along with my music career and I've been successful at both and I thank God and I thank my fans for keeping me in it".
