By Jason LewisSentinel Staff WriterLeuzinger High School has a legit quarterback, and they are riding his arm to dramatic victories this season.
Te'Shon Burton has the measurable that any college scout would love. 6'3", nearly 200 lbs, and very athletic. But Burton does not rely solely on his quickness like many athletic quarterbacks do. He is a passer and he looks to get the ball into his receivers' hands, usually downfield.
Against Palos Verdes this past Friday, Burton was in shotgun formation nearly the entire game as Leuzinger was playing catch up. His poise in the pocket allowed him to complete 22-of-29 passes (75%) for 471 yards and five touchdowns.
When Palos Verdes would get a good pass rush on him he would easily scramble away from them. The difference between Burton and many high school quarterbacks is that when he scrambles he does not tuck the ball in and run, he's still looking downfield for open receivers.
"My job is to keep the ball moving, to get us first downs," Burton said. "I have to scan the field because anything can open up at anytime."
The defensive backs cannot cover his receivers for long, and when somebody gets open Burton was great at spotting him and delivering a pass on the money with just enough touch to drop the ball over defenders.
When the defense did not blitz him he just stood tall in the pocket and patently waited for a receiver to get open. It did not appear that anything the defense did fazed him at all.
Burton is not a dink and dunk quarterback. He has the arm strength to throw the deep ball and attack the outer edges of the field.
Burton is also a great leader on the field, and he believes in his teammates that they will do their jobs to make the offense work.
"I'm just believing in my line that they will have my back," Burton said. "And I'm believing in my receivers that they will get open. Once we do that the play is good"
Burton's abilities propelled Leuzinger to a 26-point 4th quarter, giving them a 35-28 victory.
Trailing 21-9 in the 3rd quarter Burton put his team on his back. Palos Verdes did not have an answer for him on any drive and it was pretty obvious that every time Leuzinger had the ball that Burton was going to lead them to a touchdown.
Leuzinger is 5-1, and Burton has passed for 1,688 yards, completed 63% of his passes, and has thrown 15 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Burton has verbally committed to Portland St, but he is starting to get noticed by some bigger schools. PAC 10 schools, including UCLA, have shown some interest, and UNLV and San Diego St. as well.
Burton will weigh his options, and he has a great support system that will help him make the right decision. Wherever he goes, somebody will be getting a great quarterback who has all the tools to win.
