"This Is It" - Michael Jackson Movie
By Sam JohnsonSentinel Intern 750 million albums sold. Check. 2 time Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame initiate. Check. Most successful entertainer of all time. Check. The list of accomplishments held by icon and King of Pop Michael Jackson can most certainly continue. But his majesty had a resume by the age of 16 that was so sweet it left those around him eating sour grapes or being saturated with his success. The life of this musical genius touched many. Whether you're a Liberian girl or just a pretty young thing his love ballads seduced women of all races and generations. And just when one thought he was a lover not a fighter, Jackson moonwalked his way into the hearts of gangsters by pushing the boundaries through beat it, bad and the infamous smooth criminal classic.
While it appeared Michael Jackson was on top of the world especially in the mid nineties, there were many perceptions of the King of Pop. To his fans he was the Peter Pan of the music industry who opened his heart and his home, Never Never Land to children as a means of sharing the childhood that he never had. But to the media, he was known as "Wacko Jacko" amongst other names for rumors and other mischief. Since his Invincible album in 2001, Michael has been trying to keep his name clean while fighting several child molestation charges. Nevertheless fans remained loyal and felt it was time for another tour from Motown's legend. Alongside the support of AEG Live, Michael was determined to grant his fans the gift of a lifetime.
Jackson, who claimed this would be his final curtain call, even titled his tour This is It. He was scheduled to perform 50 concerts opening in London this July as an attempted comeback to place his standing in history once and for all. Rumors of Jackson's financial stability also serve in the eyes of many as the superior reason behind the King of Pop's dubious return after 8 years. Then on June 25, 2009 the heartbeat of the entire world came to a stop around 2:26 p.m. PT. TMZ reported he suffered from cardiac arrest around 12:15 pm. Jackson was rushed to UCLA Medical Center where doctors tried to resuscitate him but were not successful. He was pronounced dead at 2:26PM at the age of 50. Many suspect that the trials, surgeries, financial stress and a host of other contributions in his life had finally caught up with him physically.
The question that immediately comes to mind is whether father Joe Jackson is the blessing or the cursing behind the music and the mayhem. After all, he is responsible for the success of the Jackson 5 and pushing the boy band to become musical sensations. He is also responsible for not allowing the boys to enjoy an ordinary life. Extracurricular activities were extremely limited for the Jackson 5 outside of family fun and games. However, those same strict boundaries, alongside his passion and energy is what brought Michael from remote in Gary, IN to the mega super star he is today.
Over the duration of his career, Michael Jackson made many changes through his music, looks, and definitely his reputation. His persona is comparable to Brad Pitt's character in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. As a child he was a man in a boy's body which was represented through his ability to become a star by the age of 13. Then as an adult he was a boy in a man's body which he also represented through the Never Land ranch and trying to recapture a time of his life he was robbed of childhood. But one thing that won't change is the history he has written in record books, the humbleness and humility he always displayed, the contributions he made to society, and his strive for excellence and being the best. The moonwalk is what made him so magical. The glove was what made him so bad. His ability to transcend his swagger from gangster to gentleman was what made him so dangerous. And finally, his ability to stay atop the charts his entire life - and even in death- reclaim his credibility by selling out worldwide, certifies that his magic is invincible.
