Los Angeles resident Felix Bell passed away recently after a memorable life as a police detective, business owner, actor, and dedicated church member.

His homegoing service, set for Thursday, May 31, at 11:30 a.m., will include the eulogy by Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr., presiding prelate of the 5th Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church and former pastor of Bell's. The service will be held at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 7900 South Western Avenue in Los Angeles where the Rev. Dr. Kelvin T. Calloway is the pastor.

Felix was born on October 16, 1922 in Ferriday, Louisiana to the Rev. Willie and Mrs. Flanna Bell. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1945 and earned the rank of sergeant. Also, he graduated from Pepperdine University and Southwest Law School.

In 1951, Felix began a 27-year career with the Los Angeles Police Department where he became one of the first African-American detectives as well as trained and mentored many officers and civilian employees, including Los Angeles Councilmember Bernard Parks, Sr.

Felix was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. His film work includes ‘Scarface,' ‘Rocky' and ‘FAME.' In addition, he owned and operated a dress shop, shoe store and a security company.

An active community member, Felix served as president of the Florence-Firestone Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of the Florence Area Youth Advisory Board and South Central Los Angeles YMCA Advisory Council. He was also a member of Brookins Community A.M.E. for several years, later uniting with New Philadelphia A.M.E. and Second A.M.E. Church.

Felix is survived by his wife, June, two sons, one daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins including Alma Scott Lurry, whom he called his cousin/sister, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
