South L.A. Fourth Graders Judge Science Exhibits

Young_Scientist
YOUNG SCIENTIST AT WORK

In a twist on the traditional science fair, fourth grade students from Foster and Carver Elementary Schools will judge biomedical science exhibits presented by working scientists. When their evaluations are finished, judges will vote for their favorite exhibits. Awards will be presented after a lunch of pizza. The point of the fair is for kids to learn science and for scientists to learn how to talk about their research findings in biology and medicine.

Science activities relevant to the biomedical sciences will be presented by faculty, students, and staff from the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, California State University-Los Angeles, UCLA and Loma Linda University.

Judges will be escorted to the various exhibits by high school students from King/Drew Magnet High School. Banners and welcome signs were also created by the King/Drew Magnet High School students.

This event, undertaken in collaboration with Dr. Deborah Colbern, founder and director of the National Kids Judge! Partnership, is supported by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) to Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), an institute within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Through this competitive grants program, the NCRR SEPA program sponsors partnerships amongst researchers, educators, and community groups to share their knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm about health and science research with K-12 students and the general public. The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Charles Drew University is one of the institutions across the United States to receive this funding.
