Wednesday jazz series opens with Billy Mitchell

Billy Mitchell, one of the premier jazz pianists of our time, kicked off a Wednesday Jazz Series on June 6. He appeared with the high energy Jazz Leaders, which featured Bobby Rodriguez on trumpet; Rickey Woodard on sax; Ryan Cross on bass; Bobby Matos on percussion; and Paul Kriebich on drums.
Mitchell has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz Festival and the Heineken World Music Festival; he was also featured in the critically acclaimed "Bird," directed by Clint Eastwood, who's a huge jazz fan.
Additionally, Mitchell's authored a book titled "The Gigging Musician."
Most significantly, Mitchell founded the Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy, a program designed to increase participation of inner-city students in music and arts scholarship competitions.
