SOUTH GATE CA-----Incumbent Congresswoman Laura Richardson was the big winner at the annual Pre-endorsement Conference at Region 17 at the American Legion Post 335 on Saturday March 20, 2010 where delegates vote to recommend candidates for the California Democratic Party endorsement.Rep. Richardson who represents California's 37th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Long Beach, Carson, Compton and Watts/Willowbrook, was recommended by 94.33 percent of the delegates. Rep. Richardson earned 50 of the 53 votes cast at the conference. Challenger Peter Matthews captured just one vote for 1.88 percent.Recommendations from the conference were immediately sent to the California Democratic Party in Sacramento. The recommendations will be ratified at the annual State Convention to be held on Los Angeles from April 16 through April 18 in Los Angeles where endorsements will be announced."Technically it means that The Congresswoman maintains almost unanimous support from the delegates and clubs in the 37th District that initiate the endorsement by the party. It is a huge deal," said a California Democratic Party official. The recommendation normally results in an official endorsement."Rep. Richardson went the extra mile as she normally does for her constituents and flew in from Washington D.C. just hours before the historical vote on healthcare, was gratified about the majority votes of support received for her and her staff's ongoing efforts to serve the constituents of the 37th District."To say that I am honored would be a vast understatement. I am thankful to the delegates who voted for me because it validates from an active supporter in our district how we are doing and demonstrates their trust and confidence," stated Rep. Richardson."I clearly understand the responsibility that comes with such recommendations, and I pledge my on-going promise to continue the hard work that I've began in the 37th District, and to ensure that our residents and businesses are a part of that work as we get our economy moving forward again."
