Already endorsed by community heavy hitters Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Sentinel publisher Danny Bakewell Sr., and 8th District Councilmember Bernard Parks, CA Democratic Party Secretary Reggie Jones-Sawyer, a leading candidate in the race to replace Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass in California's 47th Assembly District on Tues., June 8, recently picked up the endorsement of civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr.

Reggie's family was one of the pioneers in the civil rights movement. His uncle was one of the "Little Rock Nine" - nine high school students who braved violent mobs to integrate Little Rock's Central High School in of the most important events in our nation's history.

While Reggie was only an infant during his uncle's experience, he later faced an eerily similar situation as a young boy in Hartford, Connecticut. Reggie was one of the first African American students to be bussed out of his neighborhood in an effort to integrate suburban schools and provide inner city youth with a better education.

Reggie drew the courage he needed from the strength of his uncle. He knew that individual acts could change the course of history. The result was a lifelong commitment to civil and human rights, and a passion for improving the community around him.

The 47th Assembly District includes Culver City, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, Mid-City, West Adams, Ladera Heights, the Crenshaw District, Little Ethiopia and portions of Korea Town and South Los Angeles.
