HBCU Philander Smith Los Angeles Chapter to Hold 2010 Scholarship Luncheon

Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of the historically Black college Philander Smith (Little Rock, Arkansas) will hold its 2010 Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, June 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Carson Community Center (801 East Carson Street). This year's keynote speaker is current college president Walter Kimbrough, Ph.D. and 2010 honorees include long time F.A.M.E. Trustee Board Member and Delta Sigma Theta member Vivian Hines, Far West Region Alumni President for Philander Smith College. Hines, who graduated from Philander Smith College in 1966 after majoring in social work, is currently a clinical social worker for the Veteran's Administration Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center and is being honored for her role in helping Los Angeles area students attend historically Black colleges and universities, including her alma mater. Additional 2010 honorees include Huey Dredd. The luncheon donation is $45 and proceeds are tax deductible and benefit scholarships given at Philander Smith College. Philander Smith College is a private, residential, co-educational, four-year undergraduate liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist church and a founding member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Philander is classified as a baccalaureate (liberal arts) college by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Updated in 2007, the College's mission is to graduate academically accomplished students who are grounded as advocates for social justice, determined to intentionally change the world for the better.

Walter M. Kimbrough, Ph.D., is the 12th president of Philander Smith College.
