Alpha Kappa Alpha host A Hot Pink Affair scholarship luncheon

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Mu Lambda Omega Chapter hosted A Hot Pink Affair, which is their annual scholarship fundraiser.

Over 300 guests supported this scholarship luncheon and were treated to a high class and jazzy affair.

"This event is to support and keep service and scholarship at the forefront of our activities," Pier Hunt said. "We currently have a membership of 55 undeniably beautiful, on the go women. Who have the mission of sisterhood, which ultimately supports Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This event not only celebrates the living legacy of Mu Lambda Omega, but more importantly, asserts in being an active participant of the community of supporting our youth of continued education."

Scholarship recipients were Ariella Carrion, Michelle Harris, Shannon Polee, LeeAnn Sanchez, Karra Manier, and Candice Marie Manier.

Carrion recently graduated from King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science and will attend UCLA in the fall. She has won numerous honors and awards, including the Principal's Honor Roll, and Perfect Attendance. At UCLA she will major in sociology with a minor in education with an emphasis in disability studies.

Harris will be a sophomore at UCLA this fall where she is a sociology and public health major. Her career goal is to establish her own Alzheimer's disease clinic. She was one of 20 students accepted into the competitive UCLA Pathway into Student Health Professions Program, which places students in internships in the public health sector.

Polee graduated from Westchester High School and will attend UC San Diego in the fall. She was an active participant in student government throughout her elementary, middle and high school years. She will major in English literature and minor in African American Studies.

Sanchez graduated from King Drew Magnet High School and will attend UCLA in the fall where she will pursue a degree in business and engineering. She has many goals in addition to designing buildings, of which one is to initiate a project with she will call Start a Trend, Save a Life. This program will benefit teenagers by allowing her to connect with local youth and assist them in becoming productive citizens.

Karra Manier is a junior at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, where she is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Spanish and Pre-Medicine. She has been honored on the Dean's List and Honor Roll every semester since the fall of 2008.

Candice Manier is a senior at Spelman College. She is spending her summer in Washington DC, as she was selected to participate in the Quality Education for Minorities Internship Program. As a senior, she is one step closer to matriculation into medical school.

"Receiving this scholarship has motivated me toward fulfilling my goals in life," LeeAnn Sanchez said. "I am assured that there are people who are willing to help someone succeed in life, and I plan to do the same. Thank you, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority."

Mu Lambda Omega is involved with a number of community organizations, such as Good Sheperd Center for Homeless Women and Children; Victoria Rowell (Thanksgiving Baskets); Parent School Earn, Save, Proper Kids Club and Economic Summit; Drew Medical Auxiliary Teen Health Conference; Annual Foster Family, Kids Club Holiday Skating Party; and 2010 Census Outreach Partnership.
