Showing support for education in a tangible way, Christ Our Redeemer (COR) Community Development Corporation awarded nearly $50,000 in scholarships to scores of high school and college students.

During the Annual Martin Luther King Graduation Day on May 27, Pastor Mark E. Whitlock II presented $1,000 awards to 50 MLK scholarship winners to assist with tuition, housing, books, and other needs. Also, Ms. Tiara Rose earned the grand prize $2,500 scholarship for writing the best essay.

In addition, 16 graduates of UC Irvine and CSU Fullerton received $100 scholarships and six graduates from Aliso Niguel High School took home $25 awards.

According to Pastor Whitlock, who started the program in 1998 with Bobby MacDonald, "The COR congregation is seriously committed to empowering and encouraging youth to pursue and achieve educational excellence because education never ends."

COR's belief led to the establishment in 2000 of a nonprofit corporation to raise funds for deserving students who must meet specific criteria to qualify for the scholarships. Church members raise funds by sponsoring luncheons, concerts and other events. Several major corporations also make financial contributions. Over the years, COR has presented more than $300,000 in scholarships.

"We are pleased at the success of this special day and appreciate the outstanding efforts of Scholarship Chair Ron Guyer and Scholarship Committee members Alisa Bass-Covington, Karla Guyer and Deborah Davis," added Pastor Whitlock.

Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church is located at 46 Maxwell Street in Irvine. For information, call (949) 955-0014 or visit
