Wellington's Road: Learning All Over Again

I'm finding that as time goes by, my mother and I have to learn how to relate to one another all over again. I'm an adult now and some of my life choices may rub her the wrong way. There are times when her suggestions aren't necessarily asked for or we differ in opinion.

Let me just make one thing clear before I continue...I absolutely love and respect my mother! She is very wise and has been there and done that before I was born but I have to live my life and make my mistakes like everyone else.

This issue isn't just subject to me as every parent and child go through it. The dynamics change in the relationship, as children get older. This issue can get especially hairy when children still live at home in their late 20's and early 30's. Most people would say 'move out' which should be considered but sometimes situations may leave no other choice.

Communication is key between older children and parents if they want healthy relationships. It's important to let your parents know where you stand in your life while being respectful. It may also serve us well to listen to experience rather than reap consequences later.

Nevertheless is all about learning how to relate all over again as you get older. Parents will always be parents but might have to learn how to be a good friend to their older children. Older kids may also do better to listen rather than act like an over grown brat.
