AMEs gathered in Birmingham, Ala., June 26-30, for the changing of the guard at the session of the General Board/Council of Bishops. The Rt. Rev. James L. Davis, the presiding prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District, which includes the state of Alabama, is the president of the Council of Bishops.
The Rt. Rev. T. Larry Kirkland, presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, which includes California, is the new president of the General Board.
During the meeting, a report on the Haiti and Malawi earthquake disaster was made. The report noted that $1,278,499 raised for Haiti but does not include $139,357 raised by the Rt. Rev. Sarah Davis through donors. The estimated cost to repair/rebuild five of the churches affected by the earthquake in Haiti is $1,497,000.
The Council of Bishops Committee on the Quadrennial Theme, chaired by the Rt. Rev. Vashti M. McKenzie, through the sale of Anvils, awarded gifts of $10,000 each to the 16th and 20th Episcopal Districts, toward earthquake disaster relief.
Bishop Kirkland, the 114th presiding prelate of the AME Church, was assigned the Fifth Episcopal District in 2008, after serving the Ninth Episcopal District. He has also served the 17th Episcopal District which includes the countries of Zaire, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The Fifth Episcopal District Annual Conferences will begin with the Desert Mountain, Aug. 23-29, at Greater Bethel AME Church in Phoenix. The Midwest Conference is scheduled Aug. 30-Sept. 5, at St. Paul AME, Wichita, Kan.
The California Conference is slated Sept. 13-19, at First AME Church in Oakland.
The Southern California Conference will be held Oct. 4-10, and the Missouri Conference is scheduled Oct. 25-31, at St. John AME Church in St. Louis. District Planning and Leadership Retreat will be held Nov. 1-2, at St. John AME Church.
