Every single day, 90 Americans take their own lives. That translates to 3 from Los Angeles County every day. Do the math, and one American dies by suicide every 16 minutes. Sadly, 90 percent of these individuals have a diagnosable mental illness, although half of them have never even seen a mental health care professional.
Indeed, the numbers are shocking, but there is certainly more than a glimmer of hope thanks to Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services' Suicide Prevention Center, which has helped more than half a million people in emotional distress.
Proceeds of this year's Alive & Running will directly benefit Didi Hirsch's Suicide Prevention Center.. Founded in 1958, the Suicide Prevention Center (SPC) was the first program in the U.S. to establish a 24-hour suicide prevention Crisis Line.
SPC also provides support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, outreach and training to the community, and a Suicide Response Team that works with the Mayor's Crisis Response Team, the coroner's office and local police and fire departments to provide immediate support at the scene of a suicide.
Be sure to visit www.aliveandrunning.org for more information about the walk/run or www.didihirsch.org for more information on Didi Hirsch and its services.
