Greater Bethany Community Church's family reunion, representing current and past members going back as far as the 1940's, will be held September 4-5, 2010, beginning with a family picnic, Saturday September 4, from noon to 5 p.m. at Dolphin Park, 21205 Water St, Carson, CA. Burgers, hot dogs, chips, water and soda will be provided; however, you may bring additional foods, if you choose. The reunion will culminate with a celebration service at 7:30 p.m., on September 5, 2010, at the City of Refuge, located at 14527 S. San Pedro St. in Gardena.
Greater Bethany Community Church was founded Church of the Apostolic Faith in 1939 by Bishop Charles Whittiker, who passed the mantel to Elder Irving Bell in 1947. Elder Bell, after changing the name to Bethany Apostolic Church, went home to be with the Lord in November 1960 and the pastoral mantel was transferred to his wife Evangelist Mary Bell through 1961. In 1962 "God's Man of Action" Bishop Robert W. McMurray, chosen as shepherd to Bethany Apostolic, later changed the name to Bethany Community Church A.K.A. Greater Bethany Community Church. He was pastor, mentor, teacher and preacher for 32 years, until his passing in 1994. Over 16 churches were founded under his anointed outreach ministry, while countless others were saved through his teaching and preaching.
The legacy continues in June 1994 as the illustrious and charismatic Bishop Noel Jones was chosen and installed as Pastor to succeed Bishop McMurray after his death. The membership, under Bishop Jones' pastorate, increased so significantly that in 2003 Greater Bethany Community Church A.K.A. the City of Refuge, relocated to a newly-acquired edifice in Gardena, CA to accommodate the ever expanding growth of its mission, the "Ministry of Reconciliation".
You are invited to renew past acquaintances with friends and family, find out what paths they have taken, and meet their families. Join us in a celebration of seventy-one years of ministry on Sunday, September 5, 2010, 7:30 P.M. at the City of Refuge.
