Air quality strategy sets higher goals for San Pedro Bay ports

The Los Angeles and Long Beach boards of Harbor Commissioners will reconvene on November 22, to consider approval of the 2010 San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) Update, which sets even more aggressive goals and strategies for reducing air pollution and health risks from the goods transportation industry.

When the original CAAP was adopted in 2006, the ports designed it as a "living document" that would be periodically reviewed. The 2010 Update is the result of that process of improving the original CAAP.

The two harbor commissions met jointly on October 6, 2010, to consider the CAAP Update and both boards voted to continue the matter to allow for additional public review of the Update.

The follow-up to that is the November 22 meeting, scheduled at 2 p.m. at Banning's Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water St., Wilmington 90744. The meeting will be webcast live at www.polb.com/webcast and on the Port of Los Angeles website here.

The 2010 CAAP Update, Fact Sheet and "Response to Comments" documents are available at www.cleanairactionplan.org, www.polb.com/caap or www.portoflosangeles.org.

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are the two busiest U.S. seaports, moving $300 billion in trade each year and supporting more than 500,000 jobs in Southern California.
