Rev. Sonja Dawson and Rev. Dr. Lonnie DawsonThe Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson, senior pastor and founder of New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, recently announced his retirement after nearly 50 years of service. ìIn recognition of Dr. Dawsonís accomplishments, the Los Angeles Baptist Ministersí Conference (LABMC) on will present him with a Lifetime Achievement Award on Monday, December 6, at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 4269 S. Figueroa Blvd., in Los Angeles,î said Pastor Marvis Davis, LABMC President. The Rev. Dr. Melvin Wade is the host pastor.The Rev. Sonja Dawson has been selected as pastor-elect of New Mount Calvary, said Bro. Walter Mason, Trustee Chairman and Bro. Elroy Webb, Chairman of Deacons.Her installation service is January 23, 2011 at 4 p.m. Also, Rev. Dr. Dawson will be elevated to the status of Pastor Emeritus during the program. Dr. Dawson organized New Mount Calvary in 1967 with six people and now membership exceeds 3,000. Under his leadership, God has blessed the church to sponsor a Child Care Center and an Elementary and Middle School. In addition, Sunday School averages 450 and the congregation is active involved in several outreach ministries to the community.Also, Dr. Dawson and New Mount Calvary have provided extensive aid to Haiti including coordinating the shipment of five truckloads of clothing to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and currently restoring a road which leads to a church and school on the mountain.He has served terms as president of the Southern Area Clergy Council and the Minister's Fellowship of the Crescent Bay West Los Angeles Association, on the Executive Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and as Co-Chairman of AACKA, an African American-Korean group of pastors.†New Mount Calvary is located at 402 East El Segundo Blvd., in Los Angeles.
