Auburn is the BCS champions, but TCU is the Sentinel’s champsBy Jason LewisSports Editor
The BCS got exactly what they wanted. Two big time teams and a very exciting game that came down to the final play. Auburn and Oregon gave the nation one hell of a game, no question about that. The BCS did not want TCU getting in the way of that. Auburn’s defensive line was amazing, quarterback Cam Newton made numerous plays, and in a game of inches, Auburn running back Michael Dyer’s knee never hit the ground, leading to the 22-19 victory. But, Auburn did field a player who should have been ruled ineligible (Newton). If the NCAA abided by their rules, Auburn would not have been there in the first place. Take away Auburn and the only undefeated team is TCU, who defeated a very good Wisconsin team 21-19 in the Rose Bowl. So TCU is the Sentinel champions. Even with Newton playing, who is to say that TCU could not have defeated them? It is not far fetched at all. Really looking at it, a one loss Ohio State team could have given Auburn a run for their money too. In an eight-team playoff, maybe Auburn does not even make it to the title game. That’s the beauty of a playoff system, the two highest ranked or seeded teams do not always make it to the title game. Their great season sets them up for an easier road to the title game, it does not put them in it. The BCS title game was the highest rated show in cable television history. Imagine if there were six playoff games leading up to the title game. The NCAA would be printing money, and for the first time ever there would be an official NCAA division I-A college football champion. In the long run, the title might end up with TCU because if the NCAA, or the FBI, finds a money trail between Auburn and Newton, the BCS title might get snatched from them and possibly handed over to TCU. But that will not matter to the BCS folks, because they would have already cashed in on the Auburn vs. Oregon game.
