Verbum Dei High School will be having its Annual Mardi Gras Awards Dinner to celebrate and support Scholarships for students on Thursday, March10, 2011, at 6:00 P.M., at the California Club in Downtown Los Angeles.

Those being honored are board members (Patty Smith and Charlie Smith); two others are stalwart participants in the Schools Corporate Work Study Program (Mike Smith and Pete Smith - Bob Smith Toyota, La Crescenta-Montrose); and John McGarry, SJ, in his final year as Provincial for the California Province who has been a significant benefactor with funds, ideas, Jesuit sponsorship, and constant encouragement.

Current sponsors of the event are Allen Lund, Archer Norris, Edison International, Latham & Watkins, Union Bank, US Bank, and Wells Fargo.

Verbum Dei High School is a Jesuit Catholic college and career preparatory for young men who are economically (average household income is $27,000, with an average household size of 4.34) and academically underserved (most students enter Verbum Dei 3 or 4 grades behind) in Watts and the surrounding communities. The school provides a student-centered, college preparatory curriculum that promotes an honest exchange of ideas and opportunities for leadership and service. The academic program is designed so students will be college-ready by their senior year, developing in them the desire for post-secondary education. For the last three years, 100% of Verbum Dei graduating seniors have been accepted into college.
