Beverly O’Bryant aka Brandiva and Karl Thomas aka Sir Jerk are cooking some good food, the kind of food that makes you say, ‘Please sir, can I have some more?!’
Together, they have a catering service, Brandiva and Sir Jerk’s, and they’re looking to make some of their delicious recipes for you.
O’Bryant originally hails from Chicago, Illnois. O’Bryant was a professional model under the alias Brandy. “Since I’m old now, I just say Brandiva and Sir Jerk [Thomas] is because, everything you can jerk, he jerks,” said O’Bryant.
“We started about four months ago,” said O’Bryant. “We’re brand new.”
“I’ve been cooking since I was a little girl,” said O’Bryant. “Our church burned down when I was about seven, so we built our church up with having dinners.” O’Bryant came to California from Chicago in 1997 and moved to Southern California three years ago. The experience of cooking for her church back east as a child was enough to lend a magic touch with food, which she enjoys doing now.
“I’ve been cooking since I was almost five years old, said Thomas. “We used to cook up in the mountains, on the fire and that’s where it started and I learned how to cook. I love to cook.” Originally from Jamaica, Thomas cooks learned how to cook Caribbean foods. They combinations of soul food and Jamaican food makes for a delicious experience.
Both Thomas and O’Bryant have medical backgrounds, with O’Bryant having her Masters as a licensed Clinical Chemical Dependency Counselor. “Now that I’m retired, I’m doing what I’ve always had a passion for,” said O’Bryant. Thomas is a retired dialysis therapist from the University of Chicago.
These two foodies came to meet between a mutual friend and began to brainstorm how to make use of their cooking skills. Their love of food birthed the idea of a catering service. Now, their out to brand the Los Angeles area with Brandiva and Sir Jerk’s.
Some of their signature dishes include rice and red beans, cooked cabbage, fried corn and of course, jerk chicken. “Anything Caribbean, curried goat, oxtail, whatever you want, I can make it signature for you,” said Thomas. They cook their food with fresh herbs, no artificial flavors and in healthy fats like olive oil.
“I do the soul food,” said O’Bryant,” and all the baking.” The desserts include peach pie, with no sugar, completely and naturally sweetened. O’Bryant also has a signature pie, a Caribbean Sweet Potato pie. Yum!
O’Bryant and Thomas are already looking forward to being a part of the 2011 Taste of Soul Event (TOS), which there are sure to make mouths water. “We’re looking very forward to being in Taste of Soul,” said O’Bryant. TOS, a community event, has continued to feature some of the best cuisine from local restaurants, catering services and eateries since 2006.
They currently rent out space at Mama’s Kitchen in Pasadena. It won’t be long until they have their own establishment especially once people taste their food.
“We’re available,” said O’Bryant. “We serve good, healthy, clean food,” said Thomas. These two chefs, make sure it’s definitely “a delight in every bite!”
