Evangelist Manuel Scott, Jr.
National Evangelist Manuel Scott Jr. is setting new records. More new speaking engagements are scheduled this year than in any other year of his ministry. 2011 is already on track to be his busiest year ever.
2010 was also a record year for Evangelist Manuel Scott Jr. in many respects. He preached 243 times and spoke at 125 churches and conventions in 2010. Last year, Evangelist Scott caught 95 planes and spent 136 days and nights in hotels to preach the Word. He spent 97 days preaching locally in Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County and the Inland Empire in 2010. Last year, Evangelist Scott conducted 54 revivals and workshops.
Evangelist Manuel Scott Jr. is believed to be the first Seminary-trained, full-time evangelist coming out of the Black Baptist Church. Several renowned pastors said it couldn't be done. He is now entering his 29th year as a full-time evangelist and the 39th year of his ministry.
Evangelist Scott has conducted well over 1000 revivals nationwide and has spoken for eleven different denominations to date. He has preached in 35 states. At times, he has preached back-to-back up to three weeks straight, traveling from church to church, city to city, state to state. More than 20,000 persons have come to the Lord under his preaching and teaching.
This was not Manuel Scott Jr.'s original plan for his life. Although he came out of Calvary Baptist Church in Los Angeles where he was affectionately known as "Baby Junior" as the son of their renowned pastor, Manuel Scott Sr., he dreamed of becoming a sociologist when he graduated from Dorsey High in 1967. He attended Bishop College in Dallas, Texas where he was elected Freshman Class President.
A year later, Scott's career path changed when he transferred to UCLA with every intention of going to law school. But God had other plans. As early as high school, Scott began writing sermons in his head.
After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in political science, and earning his master's of divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, New Jersey), Manuel Scott Jr., was called to pastor at Park Windsor Baptist Church in Los Angeles in 1977.
During his tenure as pastor, Park Windsor was one of the fastest-growing young adult churches in the city. Five years later, against the advice of some of his mentors, he made the dramatic decision to leave Park Windsor to become a full-time evangelist. He established Manuel Scott Jr. Ministries, Inc., in June 1982.
Evangelist Scott is still in great demand, considering that 29 new pastors have scheduled him to preach to their congregations in 2011. Bible colleges have tried to woo him to become an adjunct professor. His schedule is booked a year in advance, including 40 "Annual Sundays" (i.e., Trinity Baptist Church on the third Sunday in April every year).
Evangelist Scott usually preaches twice on Sundays, but has spoken at as many as three different churches in one day. He prefers to keep Mondays free, because, "I feel Sundays on Mondays," but often squeezes in another service, if asked. December is his lightest month of preaching, with one or two Sunday services each week, no revivals, and a youth convention after Christmas.
Even with a schedule that would exhaust the average minister, Evangelist Scott still found time to research and write his first book, The Quotable Manuel Scott, Sr: Words from a Gospel Genius. He compiled nearly 500 quotes, never before under one cover, from his late father's books, sermons and unpublished papers, including quotes contributed by 33 pastors and others who knew Dr. Scott well. The late Dr. Manuel Scott Sr. was twice named one of "America's 15 Greatest Black Preachers" by Ebony Magazine as well as Outstanding Minister of the Year by the Los Angeles Business Association.
Evangelist Scott also conducts workshops and conferences for men, women, singles, youth, church leaders and ministers. He has also written more than 70 contemporary "lectures," including "Sister, Jesus Has Your Back," "I'm Too Blessed To Be Stressed," "What's Up?" and "Preacher Wait Your Turn."
Being a full-time evangelist is not the glamorous lifestyle many might imagine it to be, with the rigorous travel schedule, cancelled flights, social obligations, and preparation it entails. Yet, Evangelist Scott has no plans to slow down any time soon. Fortunately, he has perfected a regimen, including an afternoon nap that allows him to maintain his demanding schedule.
