FOLLOW US: 

A team of students from Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles, will represent the Los Angeles Unified School District at the 2011 FIRST Robotics Championship this week in St. Louis Missouri. The learning center's team, dubbed "team 597," recently won four awards at the Los Angeles Regional Robotics Championship. Now, over the course of three days (April 27-30) the students will compete against high school robotics teams from around the world.

"I want to congratulate the Foshay Learning Center's robotic team for their outstanding wins," said LAUSD Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines.

"We are all proud of the success they have already demonstrated and we will be cheering them on when they compete in ST. Louis, " added L.A. Board of Education member, Marguerite LaMotte.

"Congratulations to our students who are excelling in skills perfect for the 21st Century," she said.

The students' awards included the Website Award, which recognizes excellence in student-designed websites; Individual Safety, celebrating teams that use innovative measures to prevent hazards; Engineering Inspiration and the FIRST Dean's List Finalist Award.

"Winning multiple awards in this competition required mastery of sophisticated, analytical and engineering skills. They are all winners," LaMotte said.

Foshay's Robotics Team "597" are: Andy Ramirez, Christopher Ayuso, David Lopez, Edgar Martinez, Elizabeth Garcia, Enrique Gante-Pineda, Esther Tobias, George Chavarria, George Madueno, Gustavo Quinteros, Ivon Gomez Rodriguez, Jazmin Navarro, Jennifer Ayuso, Jessica Rodriguez, Juan Madueno, Keith Vaquis, Kelvin Guevara, Louis Gavidia (team captain), Matthew Enloe, Noe Galicia, Odalis Perez, Sal Aguilar, Shalonda Robinson, Stephanie Mira and Willie Rabanales. Math teacher, Darryl Newhouse is the team's lead mentor.
