African American Redistricting Campaign Kicks Off Series of Town Hall Meetings to Discuss New Districts

New district lines for U.S. Congress and the California Assembly and State Senate threaten to impact how California African Americans are represented in Congress and State Legislature.

The African American Redistricting Collaborative will be holding three Town Hall meetings to inform and engage the community on current efforts to redraw district lines affecting Congress, the California Legislature (Assembly and Senate) and California Board of Equalization. The effort aims to educate African Americans on how to get involved in the campaign to and make sure that "Communities of Interest" are NOT divided or split into smaller communities that could lose political power.

The African American Redistricting Town Halls are community meetings focused on the impacts of current redistricting efforts on African American electoral representation in California.

Redistricting is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries in response to population changes determined by the results of the United States Census. The process is conducted every 10 years to guarantee that electoral districts have equal populations and those communities which share interests are kept together to prevent loss of political influence.

Without careful oversight, "communities of interest" can be divided, resulting in a loss of political power and representation.
