My sister Shonte' called to let me know that The Film Society of Lincoln Center honored her Godfather the legendary actor Sidney Poitier.  This took place a couple of weeks ago at the Alice Truly Hall in New York City.  He received the Charlie Chaplin Award.  This was there 38th year.  Previous honorees have been Betty Davis and Michael Douglas.  Having known Sidney all of my life I am so very happy such a wonderful award was given to such a wonderful person.  Very seldom do I ever tell the story about our mother (the late Gertrude Gipson, former Entertainment Editor of the L.A. Sentinel) who was the very first person Sidney met when he came to Los Angeles years ago.  What a pleasure it has been knowing him for so very long and what wonderful memories I have.  I can honestly say that he and our mother remained the best of friends until she passed a few years ago and to this day he has always been there for my Sister and me.

Congratulations to Mariah (Carey) and Nick Cannon on the arrival of Monroe and Moroccan Scott Cannon who were born on the couples 3rd Anniversary here in Los Angeles.  My grapevine tells me the couple renewed their wedding vows before leaving the hospital.

A standing ovation for Mary J. Blige who recently hosted her Foundation (FFAWN) gala in New York City at the Hammerstein Ballroom.   It was dinner and lots of entertainment with performances by, to name a few, Christine Aguilera, Anita Baker, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah and Mary J.  She sent for some of the best musicians around - our cousin, Ndugu Chanclor on drums,

Patrice Rushen (served as the musical conductor), Freddie Washington (bass guitar), Doc Powell and Greg Poree (guitar), Monyungo Jackson (percussions), Patrick Gandy (keyboard), along with six (6) horns and three (3) background vocalists.  What a band!  Her foundation helps to send underprivileged girls to college.      Sounds like a hit record to me!

The new single by Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton.  Speaking of hits L.J. Reynolds has a great new single titled, "Come Get To This".  This is on a new record label called Motor City Hit Records.  The President and CEO is Herb Strather, Real Estate Mogal and Philanthropist.  Co-owner J.J. Reynolds is best known for his work with the Dramatics.

Watching Charlie (former Gap Band) Wilson on the television show "The View" was simply wonderful.  The occasion was Sherri (one of The Views host) Shepherd's birthday and Charlie was there to help her celebrate.  He has a brand new look and sounding better than ever.  I cannot begin to tell you how very proud I am of him.  Having known him through the good times, bad times and in-between times he has proven that with determination and an incredible wonderful person by his side - his wife, Mahin - all things are possible.

Beyonce' is working closely with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign which encourages young people to stay in shape and exercise.  Looks like Tavis Smiley has another hit book, this one, "Tavis Smiley Fail Up" 20 lessons on building success from failure.

A special tribute to the Godfather of Soul, the late James Brown, featuring Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and Vusi Mahlasgla will take place at this year's 33rd

Annual Playboy Jazz Festival, June 12 at the Hollywood Bowl.  The festival will be held on June 11th and 12th.  Bill Cosby will again be Master of Ceremonies.

Until next time:  "Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to."
