New Mount Calvary (NMC) Missionary Baptist Church members, guest pastors, friends, and the neighboring community were all on hand June 5, to celebrate: "God Did It - The Vision Fulfilled," the debt-free vision of its founder, Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson, who passed away last December.
Now under the leadership of Dr. Dawson's daughter, Rev. Sonja R. Dawson Esq., NMC made good on its promise to their leader to clear the final $40,000 owed to the North American Mortgage Board.
"Today symbolizes our continued faithfulness in God. We are on the threshold of a new day, while we embrace what continues to unfold for us," commented Pastor Sonja Dawson.
Over 49 years ago, NMC settled into what was known then as the "little pink house on the corner," and over the years, as Dr. Dawson cultivated and realized one vision after the next, it now stands as a sprawling church campus with some nine properties.
Taking clear direction from her father, Pastor Dawson and five others hand-delivered the last payment to the mortgage holder based in Atlanta, Georgia. The company had never had such a request and rolled out the red carpet for NMC, their first California client.
Taking from the pay-as-you-go philosophy that has worked for nearly half a century, Pastor Dawson is holding true to that same recipe for success to propel NMC to the next level.
"Today, I am activating Gideon's Army, a financial support team to assist in achieving our future goals," exclaimed Pastor Dawson as she outlined the next steps for the church. "Our new campaign will be ‘Beautify My Temple,' and we will call on the same commitment that got us debt free, to complete these new projects."
The Beautify My Temple campaign is a two-year facility and technology enhancement program. The campaign initiatives focus on several updates to the church's nine campus facilities and developing a new communications system to enhance the use of technology in the NMC worship services and media broadcasts.
Dawson acknowledged the tireless work of all of those involved in getting to the day of celebration, including the First Lady Emeritus Mamie Dawson; her sister, Sherri Dawson- Williams; her niece and nephew, deacons, trustees, NMC members and event committee members.
