SACRAMENTO – On Monday, Senator Roderick D. Wright (D-Inglewood) honored Gardena resident Wanda Love with this year’s “Salute to Small 
Business Award” for the 25th Senate District.

Love, owner of My Place Hair Salon in Gardena for more than a decade, is also the proud mother of two grown sons and an active participant in the civic life of her city.  

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Love provided free services to displaced storm victims who relocated to the Los Angeles area and does the same for many young ladies in her community.

Love, who is studying for her bachelor’s degree in Theology, was awarded Small Business of the Year in 2008 by the city of Gardena.  She is a member of the National Congress of Black Women and South Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and serves as president of the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to volunteering her time for a wide array of worthy causes, Love is active in her church and somehow finds time for reading, sewing, swimming and traveling.  She also enjoys participating in charity benefit runs on her motorcycle. 

Legislative leaders and the California Small Business Association held a luncheon recognizing small business owners from throughout the Golden State on Monday at the Sacramento Convention Center. Each Senator and Assemblymember was able to nominate one honoree from his or her district, and 75 Members chose to participate.   

The annual event, established by the Legislature in 2000 to honor the contributions of small business to the State of California, also featured speeches by legislative leaders and small business advocates, as well as workshops on reducing small business expenses.  The theme of the morning’s presentations was “Buy California Small Business First.”

California’s 3.5 million small businesses employ well over half of the state’s private sector employees.
