Gladys Wesson-Strickland photo by Brian W. CarterGladys and Herb WessonGladys Wesson-Strickland made her transition on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, after a long illness. She was born on December 12, 1931 to John and Mary Stephens in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended the Cleveland public schools where she showed an aptitude for business skills. This training served her well throughout her long administrative career. She accepted Christ and was baptized at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Cleveland.
As a child, Gladys had a great interest in people and befriended many who crossed her path. In her teens and adult life she was active in various social, professional and political organizations such as New Frontier Democratic Club, Mothers in Action and 10th Council District Women’s Steering Committee. She was a cofounder of Women4Wesson. She could always be counted on to do more than was expected of her. She attracted people to her causes and some became lifelong supporters and friends. Gladys loved life and was independent and had a free and fun seeking spirit. She enjoyed line dancing and being with her friends. She especially delighted in family gatherings and activities.
She married the late Herman Wesson and from that union, two sons, Herb Jr. and Stephen were born. They lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked in the offices of the Cleveland Police Department. After some years, her family moved to Montclair, New Jersey where she was secretary at Royal Globe Insurance Company and the East Orange Board of Education. After her sons ventured to California, she followed them and settled in Los Angeles. She worked at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for 25 years. She met Lethard Strickland at a line dancing class and they have been married for fifteen years.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers; Booker (Dorothy) and Robert, her sisters; Louise Brown (Oscar) and Jeanette Garrett (Calvin). She is survived by her husband, Lethard Strickland, sons Herb and Stephen, daughter-in-law, Fabian, grandsons; Douglas, Patrick, Herb III and Justin, granddaughters Sierra and Jessica Wesson and Candice Bouknight, great grandson “Lil” P.J. and great granddaughter Maileah and one on the way. She is also survived by her sisters, Helen Spears (Cleo) of Columbus, Ohio, Frieda Smith (Charles) of Montclair, New Jersey and Barbara Huff of Atlanta, Georgia and a brother, Gerald Stephens (Marilyn) of Cleveland, Ohio, a devoted niece; Anita Thomas of Los Angeles and many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Gladys Wesson-Strickland is scheduled for Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 10:00 am at Holman United Methodist Church at 3320 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. Internment will take place at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. The repast will take place at Holman United Methodist Church and viewing will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2011, 6-8pm at Angelus Funeral Home located at 3875 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.
