DEF JAM RECORDING ARTIST ABRAHAM MCDONALD SET TO HEADLINE THE MUSIC BOX AWARDS AT THE USC FISHER MUSUEM HONORING TRIALBLAZERS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Inner City Mass Choir and the Lula Washington Dance Theatre will also perform at the award show to bring attention to and raise money to help keep art programs in school


Def Jam artist and winner of Oprah Winfrey’s first Karaoke Challenge Abraham McDonald will lend his talents for the purpose of bringing attention to and raising money to help keep art programs in schools at the first annual Music Box Awards at the USC Fisher Museum on September 23rd at 8pm. Red carpet and VIP reception begins at 7pm.

The awards show will also feature the Inner Mass Choir, the Lula Washington Dance Theatre and the USC Fisher Museum of Art Posing Beauty in African American Culture exhibit. Four individuals will be honored for their ongoing work with youth in the Los Angeles community.

Mattie McFadden-Lawson, the Los Angeles Commissioner of Arts, will receive the “Service Above Self” award for her continued strides in education and the advancement of the arts in both the Los Angeles and African American youth communities by fostering philanthropic partnerships benefiting under privileged youth. Recently President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint Mrs. McFadden-Lawson to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts.

Morningside High School Assistant Principal, Dr. Joyce D. Rushing will receive the “Beacon Award” for her continued work partnering with colleges, link programs, private donors and mentors to help youth transition from home to college bound life. She has helped numerous youth navigate everything from the process of securing college housing to funding donations for tuition.

Daphna Edwards Ziman will receive the “Hero’s Award” for her tireless work with foster children as founder and chairperson of Children Uniting Nations, lobbying to amend the Family Preservation Act, ensuring the safety of children returning home after foster care. Her personal experience of adopting her daughter after rescuing her from a homeless shelter inspired her debut novel, The Gary Zone, which gives a voice to the voiceless and face to the faceless. Ziman wears many hats as the President of Edwards Entertainment International, a member of the Children’s Institute International Board of Trustees and as Chairperson of ABC LOVE (Adoption Brings Children Love).

GiGi Bolden, the Artistic Director of the Amazing Grace Conservatory, will receive the “Angels Award” for her tireless creative work cultivating and sharpening the talents of countless youths inspiring them to continue to reach their dreams. AMC is a theatrical training academy that operates under the direction of Wendy Raquel Robinson.

The Music Box Awards goal is to bring attention and raise money to help keep art programs in schools and honor staples of the arts and education community.
