First Lady Yvette Williams
First Lady Yvette Williams

For the first time, First Ladies will be taking off their ‘hats,' to engage the community in a lively discussion, and allow a peek into their daily lives.

The First Lady panel will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 15, on the Gospel Stage at the 6th Annual Taste of Soul Festival.

First Ladies have traditionally served in the "strong woman behind the man" role, and in some cases are known only as the pastor's wife and helpmate.

"As we've moved into the 21st century, these ladies have increasingly grown in credibility, visibility and acknowledgement of their years of tireless service and many contributions to the spiritual life and well-being of the communities in which they serve. Not only do they continuously nourish the souls of their church families and communities, they are making a difference as accomplished mentors, ministers, authors, recording artists and CEOs," said Yvette Williams, first lady of Brookins Community AME Church and event coordinator.

"This is an exciting opportunity for first ladies like me to connect with the community beyond the walls of the churches we call home. First ladies play a significant role in the lives of their church and community, and this is a perfect venue to get a ‘taste' of the lives we lead on a daily basis."

The panel includes Mrs. Jacquie G. Wade, first lady of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church; Mrs. Togetta Ulmer, first lady of Faithful Central Bible Church; Mrs. Myesha Chaney, first lady of Antioch Church of Long Beach; and Mrs. Denise Hunter, first lady of First AME Church of Los Angeles who also serves as executive producer of the Taste of Soul Festival's Gospel Stage.

In addition to allowing the audience the opportunity to ask questions, the ladies will share insight into their many roles, their personal challenges and triumphs, and how they juggle the many projects and initiatives they are passionately devoted to. Audience members will also be invited to participate in a fabulous "First Lady" style hat giveaway.
