Everywhere you turn all you hear people talking about is the recession that has been strangling our economy. Now there is talk of a possible double dip recession Conversely we hear little about the recession on social unity that has been ravaging urban communities for decades.

I want to take this time to underscore this recession on social unity, while highlighting a Taskforce that was formed to try an act as a stimulus package of sorts for the West Athens-Westmont Community. The West Athens-Westmont Community taskforce has brought together a repository of Residents, Community leaders, Businesses, Representatives of the city, county of Los Angeles, Faith Based organizations, Local Law Enforcement L.A. Unified School District, Intervention/ Prevention Agencies, Social Service providers and other Non-profit organizations from the area. Who's mission is to develop and implement strategic sustainable action plans devised to facilitate, within the West Athens/Westmont Community, access to relevant Family and Children Services, excellent primary, secondary, and post-secondary education, livable wage employment training and placement, and viable public safety through meaningful community/law enforcement partnerships.

Utilizing the power of alliance as a weapon of mass construction, not only to build a collection of resources, but also to disseminate resources and progressive ideas. Thus broadening the debate on community issues and the casting of their net for solutions. Social assets the community can cash in on. The Taskforce is also working hard to produce an environment for a cadre of young men and women to emerge with the purpose of not only protecting the legal and moral character of their community, But to continue to crystallize their vision of a community rich in unity.

No one community is insulated from the erratic tide of social problems where upon it reaches into all of our communities in one way or another. However, Unity of Community seems to be an important ideological and sociological bodyguard in this respect. I'm not only writing about the West Athens/Westmont Taskforce social contributions from journalistic lenses, but also from a more personal perspective as my organization C.A.N.G.E.S (Community Helping Adolescence Needing Guidance Education & Support) is part of this taskforce. I firmly believe many of us at some time or another are compelled even if the impulse is small, to take a hand in solving some of the social ills of our communities. Many of us know deep dawn in our hearts and minds that it is our duty to leave our communities a little better off than we inherited them.

It is of paramount importance that we keep at the forefront of our minds that no one is too small to play a big role in positively influencing their community. The Taskforce meets every Tuesday from 10am-12pm at Chester L. Washington Golf Course 1930 W.120th St. Los Angeles Ca. 90047. The Task force welcomes you. I encourage you to join them take on their tasks with force pun intended.
