The beloved Deacon Coy L. Roberson went home to glory on Sunday, October 9. His homegoing was celebrated on Saturday, October 22, at Southwood Baptist Church, 12121 South Avalon Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Coy's Christian journey began when he was a boy at Harmony Pirtle Baptist Church in Kilgore, Texas. Coy and his wife, Mable, moved to Los Angeles and he became a charter member at Southwood Missionary Baptist Church in 1947.

Over the years, he served in many capacities at Southwood including singing in the choir, serving on the Deacon Board, and for many years, as the director of the Southwood Vacation Bible School. He was a loyal and faithful member for over 60 years.

Coy taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District and is known for having helped many young, underprivileged children learn to read and do math. Coy was a dedicated public school teacher who opted to instruct in the inner city.

Also, Coy was active in the community. He was a member of the Buffalo Soldiers Ninth and Tenth Calvary Association, the Los Angeles Consistory, the Council of Community Clubs, the Los Angeles Community-Police Advisory Board, the United Teachers of Los Angeles, the California Teachers Association, and the National Education Association.
