Randolph Johnson & Dr. Mae Brown-Johnson

Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Mae Brown-Johnson united with Colonial Care Center in Long Beach to launch a regular worship at the facility.

It wasn’t a snap decision, but rather, “a calling from the Lord,” she said, that led her to start the service.

“I consulted the Lord in everything concerning the ministry and relied on God’s guidance in caring for the residents,” recalled Dr. Brown-Johnson.

A quarter-century later, it appears that she made the right choice because today, Hospital Outreach Ministries (HOM) is a thriving non-profit that shares the Gospel and uplifts the residents two Sundays each month.

“The spiritual impact on the residents is one to be recognized. I strongly believe that God moved on their hearts and drew them closer to the Lord,” she noted.

“It is not just great fellowship, but the ministry brings spiritual encouragement and enriches their souls with the love of Christ.

“The services include prayer, singing of hymns and communion. Also, HOM provides an opportunity for evangelists and aspiring missionaries to attend and visit the residents. Professional singers and gospel groups are invited to minister as well. On Christmas, we had entertainment with dancers, musicians and singers,” said Dr. Brown-Johnson.

Dr. Brown-Johnson also applauds the support of her church, West Angeles Church of God in Christ led by Bishop Charles E. Blake. West Angeles musicians often come and play during the services.

Rob Anderson, who serves on the HOM board, said, “I feel privileged to have served at Colonial Care Home over the years with Dr. Brown-Johnson and her husband, Randolph.

“I couldn’t have asked to work with a better organization. It’s been humbling, building friendships with the residents and being able to lift their spirits.”
