University SDA Church Champions

On July 26, Los Angeles Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) churches of Los Angeles County returned for the annual Bible Quiz-o-Rama (QOZ) challenge 2014 held at Los Angeles Adventist Academy (LAAA).

University SDA Church QOZ Team was the 1st place winner this year with Smyrna SDA Church QOZ Team grabbing 2nd place once again and Antelope Valley SDA Church QOZ Team securing 3rd place.  A special acknowledgement goes out to Breath of Life SDA Church QOZ Team, who competed with only two members and managed to come in 4th place!

Michael Jenkins, pastor of Breath of Life SDA Church, served as moderator, master of ceremonies and Quizmaster of this year’s QOZ in Linda Mackey’s absence. Church members sat in the bleachers of the gymnasium at LAAA as they cheered on their respective teams.

This year’s books of study were I and II Samuel that tell the stories of Samuel, Saul and David. All the teams were required to study both books for the competition.

Mackey, the first lady of Rainbow SDA Church in San Francisco, usually serves as Quizmaster but was unable to attend this year due to the birth of her first grandchild. Mackey took over the position from her father, the late Elder Earl Canson, who was Regional Director of the Pacific Union and started QOZ over 40 years ago.

The competing churches in attendance this year were Antelope Valley SDA Church, Berean SDA Church, Breath of Life SDA Church, Compton Community SDA Church, Miramonte SDA Church, Normandie Avenue SDA Church, Smyrna SDA Church, University SDA Church and Bethel SDA Church.

Congratulations to the University SDA Bible Quiz-o-Rama Team: Ashley Peterson (team captain), Dorothy Delphin, Mark Eugene, Kalin Dangervil, Marissa Cornish, Hilaria VanPutten, Andy Harris, Sandra White, Dominique Armstrong and Beverly Dangervil (coach).

A special congratulation goes to the Mackey family and especially to Blain and Kim Gentry on the birth of their son.

University SDA Church is located at 1135 West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Los Angeles.  Contact the church at (323) 766-9889.
