WHAT NOW? Lakers star Kobe Bryant has not been able to convince Dwight Howard or Carmelo Anthony to join him on the Lakers, and now it remains to be seen if former Lakers Trevor Ariza will return on a two-year deal.  Associated Press

It appears the highlight of the Lakers’ summer will be that Jim and Jeannie Buss are talking and both on the same page. Sort of like saying it’s going to be hot as hell tomorrow, but I don’t have a swimming pool to cool down.

Imagining what it must really feel like, you can’t even convince your own best friend to come and play alongside you for a cool $95 million in the land of stars?

That’s what Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant are supposed to be…best friends. One can truly wonder if Bryant has any real best friends, considering his reputation among his NBA peers.

Yeah, he’s one of the greatest players of all time, but do they want to play alongside him?

Shaquille O’Neal didn’t! Dwight Howard didn’t! Pau Gasol did, but now he may not be returning by the time you read this.

So, where do the Lakers go from here with their Staples Center neighbors, the Clippers, seemingly closer to the championship and the Lakers closer to another lottery selection?

With word circulating that the team is only willing to go two years on free agent contracts, the chances of acquiring former Laker Trevor Ariza and rising star Lance Stephenson may all but wipe away.

What’s left is another D-League roster with an aging Bryant as the centerpiece?

No one knows for sure what will happen over the next few days, or even weeks, but this much is clear, nothing will transpire that will turn the Laker fortunes from gloom and doom to bright lights and champagne.

Can you blame Bryant for taking that two-year $48 million deal? With what they are going to surround him with, $60 million would have been about right!
