Mother’s in Action will host their 16th Annual Back to School Health &  Family Festival at the Los  Angeles Coliseum Saturday, July 19 from 10am- 3pm. For 16 years this event has been centered on providing children between the ages of 5-15 with health screenings and valuable resource information. This year’s festival will provide health screenings such as dental screenings, eye exams, blood pressure and diabetes testing and hearing exams.

The  festival will also provide school supplies, haircuts, school uniforms, immunizations and other valuable resource information. Some of this year’s

booths will include: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Explorer One Ambulance and Medical Services and Coach for Kids.

“We know that children fail because they can’t hear, they can’t see they are not properly equipped necessarily when they go to school to have a successful school year,” said  MIA President Brenda Marsh Mitchell.

“We started Back to School in order to help diffuse some of the disparities that low income families experience in the community.”

But, the thing that separates this year’s family festival from all the others is the sex trafficking and human trafficking booth. The organization will partner with the Young Women’s Christian Association of the Greater Los Angeles (YWCA) to help educate the community on child and human trafficking.

“This year we decided to incorporate sex trafficking and human trafficking because it is such a big problem in the community right now.

Kids are being snatched from schools, homes and neighborhoods,” said Marsh-Mitchell.

“It used to be kids from out of the country you would hear stuff about, but now we are hearing about it here, it’s happening in our neighborhoods so we feel like it’s our job to help educate the community.”

The sponsor and vendors for the event are the Los Angles Sentinel, Los Angeles Watts Times, The Bakewell Company, Brotherhood Crusade, United Long Term Care Workers, Explorer One, Assembly Member Reggie Jones-Sawyer, The Cochran Firm, KJLH and One Christ Church. Please remember to bring your immunization cards with you to the festival.
