As a youngster growing up in Brookins Community A.M.E. Church, Jason W. Young impressed members with his charming personality, mature demeanor and advanced financial skills.
His talents flourished in the ensuing years and recently came to the attention of President Barack Obama, who appointed Mr. Young to the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans.
“We, at Brookins, are humbled and honored to have one of our ‘sons’ serving with the President,” said Pastor Gregory K. McLeod.
“Our entire family is so proud of Jason and his accomplishments,” added his mother, Mrs. Dorothea Young, who still attends Brookins. As a youth and teenager, Mr. Young was active in the church’s Young People’s Division and a regular participant on the monthly Youth Sunday.
His achievements began at a young age. Possessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Young founded a travel agency at the age of 13 and New World Tutoring Services at 15. In 2000, he became the first black valedictorian at Pacific Hills High School.
Mr. Young’s successes continued to grow while attending Harvard University and following graduation, in positions at Merrill Lynch and Nvest, Inc., on Wall Street. Next, he established Zindagi, LLC, an education technology company that produces web-based financial literacy software for families with students aged 9 to 13.
Currently, Mr. Young serves as co-founder and CEO of Mindblown Labs, a social enterprise that uses gaming to teach young people about personal finance and other 21st century skills. He is also the founder and president of Hidden Genius Project, a year-round mentoring and youth workforce development program.
Also, Mr. Young is a Ron Brown Scholar Program steering committee member and on the board of directors of the Harvard Club of San Francisco and the Harvard Black Alumni Society.
