March 31 marked the close of the first open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act. Recently, President Barack Obama announced that 7.1 million Americans have now signed up for private insurance plans through the new Health Insurance Marketplaces nationwide. 7.1 million American Consumers.

“The California State Conference of the NAACP played a vital role in the success through Covered California program,” said NAACP officials.

“Through our Outreach and Education Program and collaboration with BAPAC we utilized local NAACP branches throughout the state to educate 37,000 households, outreach to 95,000 households, and refer 32,000 consumers to the Covered California Exchange.”

In California the projections for enrollments were set at just under 700,000. Covered California met and superseded that mark at the end of the first open enrollment period with 1.2 million consumers enrolled in healthcare plans. The number is significant, they said, because it represents about one-fifth of Health Exchange enrollments nationwide.

If you combine the successes of Medi-Cal expansion with the Covered California exchange, nearly three million Californians enrolled in new coverage in 2014.

“It is clear that many Americans are benefitting from ObamaCare,” said California-Hawaii State NAACP President Alice Huffman.

The next open enrollment period will open in the fall of 2014 but the outreach and education events organized by the CA-NAACP will continue on until the end of December 2014; “Our goal is to get everyone covered.”
