 AYSO All-Girls Champions

Pastor Kelvin Sauls and the congregation of Holman United Methodist Church saluted youth members Gabrielle Strawn and Maria Harris on March 23 being part of the all-girls soccer team to win the 2014 California Cup State Championship.

According to Pastor Sauls, the South Los Angeles team, ‘Strike Force,’ is comprised of 12-13 year olds who play out of Kenneth Hahn Park.

“Strike Force is the first majority African American team to win the state championship in the 50-year history of the American Youth Soccer Organization, the governing body of youth soccer,” he said.   “Over 250,000 youth participate in A.Y.S.O. in California.”

“This capped an incredible playoff run that saw the South LA team beat teams from Beverly Hills, Culver City, Manhattan Beach, West LA, Hollywood, Arizona and Nevada. Strike Force outscored its opponents 56-1, and is undefeated this season,” shared Dr. Larry Strawn, Holman member and father of Gabrielle.

“The majority of the team has played together for the past three years and have been the reigning Area 1P and Section 1 Champions for the past two years. After placing second in the state finals last year, the team, coaches and parents renewed their commitment and determination to bring the state title home to South Los Angeles,” said Dr. Strawn.

Team Members are Maiya Coleman, Bailey Ball, Kyara Dixon, Emi Smith, Zara Simmons, Layla McCain, Camryn Jones, Amadi Maatafale, Gabrielle Strawn, Maria Harris, Kiana Coleman, Juliet Rodzewich, Daikiara Williams, Jordan Jensen, Sierra Merille, and Jana Ross. Coach Dave Coleman is assisted by Cortez Jones and Adam Jensen.
