The internationally renowned Fisk University Jubilee Singers perform to a crowd of about 1000 at First AME Church in Los Angeles

The internationally renowned Fisk University Jubilee singers stopped in Los Angeles March 2, while on their national tour for 2014. They performed at the First A.M.E. church to a crowd of more than 1000. Under the direction of Dr. Paul Kwami, the sixteen-member a capella group performed a collection of spirituals for which the group has won Grammy awards and has been recognized with the nation’s highest award, the National Medal of Arts, by President George Bush.  The Fisk Jubilee Singers were the first group to bring the Negro spiritual to the world, which led to the gospel genre in music.

Fisk President, Dr. H. James Williams, Fisk First Lady Carole Williams, Dr. Edwina Harris Hamby, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and Mr. Anthony Jones, Vice President for Enrollment Management were in attendance at the concert, which was sponsored by the Los Angeles Fisk Alumni Association.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville, TN., who sing and travel worldwide, according to their website.

The original Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals.

They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school.

“We stand on the shoulders of the original Jubilee Singers, continuing their legacy as we sing Negro spirituals,” they said.

The concert, said some in attendance, was “well received by the audience.”
